The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027.
The endorsement was announced on Thursday, December 12, 2025, during the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held in Abuja.
In a recommendation signed by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba and adopted at the meeting, the ministers said Ghana remains a key member of the regional bloc and continues to contribute significantly to ECOWAS’ strength and international profile. They noted that supporting President Mahama’s candidacy would help secure stronger West African representation in major regional and international organisations.
It therefore urged the Authority of Heads of State and Government, the highest decision-making body in ECOWAS, to adopt a formal declaration confirming President Mahama as the region’s official candidate for the AU chairmanship.
