The Eastern Region is the best performing region in Ghana, when it comes to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Of the ten best performing districts in Ghana, four Districts which have remarkably increased membership of the National Health Insurance Scheme in 2025, are in the Eastern Region.
The Eastern Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Frank Addo noted that by the middle of this year, the region’s membership increased from about 58% of the target set for this year, to over 116%, as of December 12, 2025. That means, the region’s overall Universal Health Coverage has reached 80%. He reiterated that currently, the Eastern Region has an active NHIS membership of over three million.

The Deputy Director for the Membership and Regional Operations Directorate of the National Health Insurance Authority, NHIA, Blandina Martin Awiah Norman commended the Eastern Regional branch of the NHIA for its achievement. She mentioned the Akuapem South, Birim South, New Juaben, and Manya Krobo Districts in particular, and urged the staff not to rest but continue to help increase membership of the Scheme in the region.

The Acting Director in charge of Quality Assurance of the National Health Insurance Authority, Dr. Lydia Anaab-Bisi, urged officers working in NHIA offices in the region to continue working in unity to build on their 2025 achievement. She encouraged them to come up with more innovative ways to improve the membership drive in the region.
At the NHIA Eastern Region End-of-Year Staff Durbar at the Aburi Botanical Garden in the Akuapem South Municipality Districts and officers in the region who distinguished themselves in increasing their membership drive were rewarded. Manya Krobo district got the Best Performance District, Best Indigent Registration, and the Overall Best Performance District, with their District Manager, Solomon Agyenim Tetteh, winning the Best Performance Manager of the Year.

The Eastern Regional Director of NHIS Frank Addo warned health facilities practising co-payment by taking money from citizens when they visit their facilities, to desist. Those who are yet to enroll on the scheme are encouraged to do so. Those whose insurance has expired, were also urged to renew their insurance to enable them to get cover when they visit any health facility.
