Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a foreign policy guided by support for others over dwelling on support from others.
Speaking at the Diaspora Summit today in Accra, Mr. Ablakwa stressed that the country must not dwell on receiving but on giving.
“..we have ensured that our foreign policy is never defined by how much we can take from others but rather guided by how support we can share with others”, he said.
The Minister noted that, Ghana ranks second in Africa in terms of the number of troops lent to the United Nations for peacekeeping missions.
He further highlighted Ghana’s humanitarian efforts, including providing relief to countries like Jamaica, Cuba, Sudan, and Palestine.
Recently, Ghana provided GH¢10 million in humanitarian aid to Jamaica, Cuba, and Sudan, following devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa and ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The aid package included food, medical supplies, and other essentials. Ghana also deployed 54 army engineers and medical officers to Jamaica to support reconstruction efforts.
Mr. Ablakwa further emphasized Ghana’s commitment to reshaping a better future for Africa and people of African descent, and to deepening the global conversation on confronting historical and contemporary injustices through reparative justice.
“We are bound by history and the spirit of resilience and committed to reshaping a better future for Africa and for all people of African descent. We have come together to deepen the global conversation that is currently being held on confronting historical and contemporary injustices through reparative justice but more than that we have come together to find solutions”, he added.
The Diaspora Summit 2025 themed, “Resetting Ghana: The Diaspora as the 17th Region,” aims to position Ghana’s diaspora as a strategic partner in national development.
