Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says the restoration of Ghana Airways will play a critical role in strengthening Ghana’s economy while reinforcing national pride.
Speaking at the closing of the Diaspora Summit 2025, Mr. Ablakwa noted that millions of dollars spent by diaspora travellers on foreign airlines could be redirected into the Ghanaian economy if the country had its own national carrier.
“Just imagine the thousands of you who attended this Diaspora Summit. Imagine if all of those tickets you bought that money was an investment in the Ghanaian economy and not in other countries, largely in post-apocalyptic Europe, where those ticket resources and revenues are going,” he said.
The Foreign Affairs Minister disclosed that a technical committee established by President John Dramani Mahama is nearing the completion of its work on bringing Ghana Airways back to the skies.
“The President has instructed that efforts be accelerated so that we can have Ghana Airways back in the skies,” Mr. Ablakwa said
He added that a national airline would also give Ghana the flexibility to offer incentives to diaspora travellers, including discounted fares for major events.
“If we had our own airlines, we could have said that those attending the Diaspora Summit, as we paid visa fees for them, we could have even given a good discount to our brothers and sisters attending this summit,” he explained.
Mr. Ablakwa described the revival of Ghana Airways as more than an economic decision, stressing that it is also about national identity and confidence.
“It’s about our pride. It’s about demonstrating, as the Osagyefo Dr Kwame said, that the Black man is capable. We are capable of managing our own affairs,” he said.
According to the Minister, reviving the national airline would strengthen ties with Africans in the diaspora while serving as a clear statement of confidence in Africa’s ability to manage strategic national institutions.
“We are proud to be working under President Mahama and Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, passionate Pan-Africanists who want to restore our image, our pride, and see the Black Star fly in the skies again,” he added.
