One person has died after a domestic fire broke out at Mempeasem, near the Railway Station Quarters in Assin Foso, in the early hours of Thursday, January 8, 2026.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says the fire was reported at 6:32am and started in a kitchen and storeroom before spreading to a Renault Duster saloon car and a nearby wooden kiosk.
A man in his thirties, identified as Kwabena Effutu, was killed in the blaze. His badly burned body was handed over to the police for conveyance to the St. Francis Xavier Morgue.
Firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes and brought the fire under control by 6:40am, preventing it from spreading to surrounding homes and structures.
The GNFS said the kitchen and its contents, as well as the Renault Duster saloon car, were saved from total destruction due to the swift response of personnel.
Officials say investigations have begun to determine the cause of the fire.
Residents in the area described the incident as devastating, saying the victim was well known in the community. Some residents have renewed calls for increased public education on fire safety, especially in densely populated neighbourhoods.
The Ghana National Fire Service has advised the public to ensure that cooking areas are properly ventilated and that flammable materials are kept away from open flames, particularly during the early hours when visibility and response time may be limited.
