The tip toe lane area at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange which was gutted by fire today is one of the places earmarked by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for redevelopment.
The fire broke out behind the VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange in Accra this morning, January 20, 2026. While the Ghana National Fire Service was at the scene battling the fire, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey visited the scene to ascertain the level of destruction.
The Accra Mayor, revealed that certain places in the city had been earmarked for redevelopment and Tip Toe Lane happens to be one of such places. He said after the fire is brought under control, his team will work to clear the place for a fresh start.
The Ghana National Fire Service has not yet disclosed the cause of the fire. Michael Kpakpo Allotey however disclosed that information he has received indicates that the fire started from an electricity pole in the area with a lot of wires connected to it.
No casualties have been reported but some properties, including shops, have been damaged.
According to him, over fifty structures have been destroyed.
