A rainstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall has damaged several public and private properties at Penteng in the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The affected properties include the local Presbyterian Primary School, the Methodist Church and some private houses, forcing occupants to seek shelter with relatives and friends.

The Assembly Member for the Penteng Electoral Area, Eric Dwomoh, told Radio Ghana that teaching and learning at the upper primary level of the affected school would have been severely disrupted but for an ongoing schools’ athletics competition.

The storm occurred at about 6:00 p.m. last Saturday during a period of heavy rainfall in the area.

“The roofs of the Primary Four, Five and Six classrooms were ripped off by the storm. Fortunately, the pupils are currently participating in an athletics competition, otherwise there would have been serious challenges,” he said.

Mr Dwomoh added that the Methodist Church was also affected, with part of its roof ripped off, forcing the congregation to hold services in a partially uncovered building.

He said at least one private residence had so far been confirmed as damaged, with the occupants currently staying with relatives and friends.

The Assembly Member said he had formally informed the Municipal Chief Executive and the Municipal Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and expressed hope that the situation would receive urgent attention.

He further advised residents to take precautionary measures to protect lives and property as the rainy season sets in.
