The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana and Colombia have signed a historic agreement to connect the Port of Tema to the Port of Cartagena.

‎The agreement was signed in Bogotá after what the minister described as successful negotiations between the two countries. It is expected to create direct maritime trade links and strengthen economic ties between Africa and Latin America.

‎The minister in a Facebook post on Monday March 24, 2026, said the deal will open new opportunities for trade, job creation, and economic growth for both nations.

‎He praised Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Elena Márquez Mina, for her strong support and commitment to the initiative. He also commended Colombia’s Foreign Minister, Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, for her leadership throughout the negotiations.

‎Mr. Ablakwa noted that the new partnership represents a positive transformation of the Atlantic Ocean route, which once symbolized the painful history of slavery. He said the corridor is now being reshaped into a pathway for opportunity, economic empowerment, and cooperation between Ghana and Colombia.
