Ghana officially launched preparations for the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, positioning Accra as the epicenter of continental track and field excellence.
The event, set for May 12-17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium, marks the country’s first time hosting this prestigious competition.
Global sensations like Botswana’s Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo and Kenya’s distance queens Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet are expected to electrify the stands, drawing massive crowds to witness Africa’s elite athletes in action.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams used the launch to call for nationwide athletics investment, highlighting the lack of proper training tracks in many regions. “Athletics remains a sport that can galvanize our nation and drive development if we make the right investments,” he declared, stressing Accra 2026’s role in inspiring young talent.
Adams emphasized creating opportunities for Ghanaian youth to witness senior stars up close, positioning the championships as a motivational platform. The event showcases Ghana’s organizational strength while addressing critical infrastructure gaps across the country.
