Zimbabwe has praised Ghana for its landmark role in securing a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.
Ambassador Albert Ranganai Chimbindi, Zimbabwe’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, described the move as a testament to Ghana’s enduring commitment to truth and justice.
“This landmark initiative reflects Ghana’s enduring commitment and leadership in truth, justice, and the dignity of Africa. Thank you, Ghana, for taking the lead, don’t stop there,” he said.
He added that the achievement provides a strong platform for Ghana to continue leading efforts that deliver meaningful outcomes for Africa and the global community.
About PJCC
Mr Chimbindi made these remarks during the inaugural session of the Ghana–Zimbabwe Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), held in Accra on Friday, 27 March 2026.
The event brought together high-level delegations from both countries for technical and ministerial-level discussions aimed at laying the foundation for a structured and results-driven partnership. The cooperation is expected to cover key sectors including trade and investment, agriculture, mining, energy, education, health, and tourism.
The partnership is expected to boost economic growth, promote investment, and enhance knowledge sharing for the mutual benefit of citizens.
Support for UN Security Council bid

Ambassador Chimbindi disclosed that Zimbabwe is seeking a seat on the United Nations Security Council and appealed to Ghana for support.
“Zimbabwe is seeking election to the United Nations Security Council for the period 2027 to 2028. The election is scheduled for 3 June 2026. In the spirit of our longstanding brotherhood and shared ties, Zimbabwe counts on Ghana’s continued and unwavering support,” he said.
He further urged Ghana to use its influence within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to rally regional support for Zimbabwe’s candidature.
He added that, if elected, Zimbabwe would work to strengthen peacekeeping operations and advance Africa’s voice on global peace and security issues.
Ghana–Zimbabwe cooperation
Ambassador Chimbindi also expressed appreciation to Ghana for its consistent support in calling for the lifting of unilateral sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, which he said have hindered the country’s socio-economic development.
“These measures have affected the livelihoods of our people and constrained our development agenda. Zimbabwe remains committed to re-engaging with all countries in line with our principle of being a friend to all and an enemy to none,” he said.
Sustainable wildlife conservation
He further called on African countries to prioritise global discussions on sustainable wildlife conservation.
“As custodians of significant wildlife resources, African voices must be heard in shaping fair, science-based global conservation policies,” he said.
PJCC a platform for transformation

For her part, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, Chief Director at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the deep historical, political, and cultural ties between Ghana and Zimbabwe.
“This meeting is both historic and symbolic. It marks not only the formal institutionalisation of cooperation between our two countries, but also a conscious effort to revitalise a relationship whose foundations were laid decades ago,” she said.
She noted that the PJCC provides a timely platform to transform cooperation into tangible development outcomes.
“By leveraging our respective comparative advantages, we can unlock new opportunities for industrial development, job creation, and overall economic growth,” she added.
Conclusion

The inaugural session of the Ghana–Zimbabwe Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation marks a significant step in strengthening ties between the two countries.
As discussions continue, both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to translating shared ambitions into concrete actions that will deepen cooperation, drive development, and improve the livelihoods of their citizens.
