The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed appreciation to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his continued support for journalists and media practice in the country.
The Association particularly acknowledged the sacrifices made by Otumfuo to host the 29th Annual National GJA Awards at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The event marked the first time the awards ceremony had been held outside the national capital since its inception.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GJA, Kofi Adu Domfeh, conveyed the Association’s appreciation when he led newly elected regional executives on a courtesy call on the Asantehene in Kumasi.
The visit was also to thank Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his longstanding support for journalists, demonstrated through his public engagements and advocacy for media development.
Mr Domfeh further expressed profound gratitude to the Asantehene for his intervention in securing the reallocation of land for the construction of a permanent regional office for the GJA in Kumasi. The previous project had been demolished following the takeover of the land by a private developer due to rezoning.
“The most important aspect of our visit is to appreciate the gesture of the King in helping to ensure that journalists in the region have a space of their own for an office,” Mr Domfeh said.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, he appealed to corporate organisations, individuals and groups to support the GJA in constructing a befitting regional press centre.
“We are using this opportunity to appeal for support as we begin the journey of rebuilding the Association. The press centre is dear to us, and we call on corporate organisations and individuals to help us build it,” he added.
Members of the GJA delegation included the Regional Vice Chairman, Nicholas Osei-Wusu; Secretary, Beatrice Spio-Garbrah; and other executives.
