The Member of Parliament for Damongo and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has reiterated the need for Ghana to maintain its long-standing foreign policy of neutrality in addressing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
He said the country’s position should be guided by multilateralism rather than partisan alignment.
Speaking on the issue, Mr Jinapor emphasised that Ghana must avoid taking sides in the Israel–Palestine conflict, stressing that neutrality remains central to the country’s diplomatic identity. He cautioned that any posture perceived as biased could undermine Ghana’s credibility on the international stage.
According to him, Ghana’s foreign policy tradition, rooted in non-alignment since independence, has enabled the country to play a respected role in global peacekeeping and diplomacy.
“We must not appear to align with Palestine against Israel, nor with Israel against Palestine,” he said, calling for a balanced and measured approach.
Mr Jinapor further argued that Ghana’s stance on such global conflicts should be framed within the broader principles of multilateralism, where cooperation among nations and international institutions such as the United Nations takes precedence over unilateral or emotionally driven positions.
He noted that this approach would help preserve Ghana’s reputation as a bridge-builder in international relations.
The Damongo MP also warned that recent statements by government officials risk portraying Ghana as taking a definitive side, which could weaken its diplomatic neutrality. He urged authorities to exercise restraint and ensure that official communications align with the country’s traditional foreign policy posture.
His comments come at a time when tensions in the Middle East continue to draw varied reactions from countries worldwide, placing pressure on nations such as Ghana to define their positions carefully within the framework of international diplomacy.
Mr Jinapor maintained that Ghana’s strength lies in its impartiality, advocating a foreign policy that prioritises dialogue, peace and cooperation over division.
