President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a new interconnecting concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3 at the Accra International Airport, marking a major step in government’s push to expand Ghana’s aviation infrastructure and strengthen its position as a regional aviation hub.

The sod-cutting ceremony for the interconnecting concourse is being described as more than symbolic. It is a strategic investment aimed at transforming passenger movement, improving efficiency, and enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness in the aviation sector.

Over the years, the Accra International Airport has evolved into a key gateway for the sub-region, with passenger traffic rising significantly from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025. However, this growth has come with increasing pressure on airport facilities, particularly during peak hours between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., affecting key processes such as check-in, immigration, security screening, and baggage handling.

President Mahama noted that without urgent intervention, these pressures could undermine operational efficiency and the overall passenger experience.

As part of a broader response, government, through the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Airports Company Limited, has already commenced the Terminal 2 repurposing project, aimed at enabling the facility to handle both domestic and international traffic, while easing congestion at Terminal 3.

The new concourse, when completed, will feature five passenger boarding air bridges, modern waiting lounges, VIP and premium facilities, retail spaces, and improved transit infrastructure.

It is expected to significantly enhance passenger flow, reduce turnaround time, and improve overall service delivery.

Beyond this project, government also outlined plans for a 7-storey multi-purpose car park at Terminal 3, complete with retail outlets, a sky-view lounge, conference facilities, and a dual-concept airport hotel, designed to support Ghana’s broader 24-hour economy agenda.

On regional aviation expansion, the President revealed ongoing procurement processes for new airports in Bolgatanga, Wa, and Nsuatre, alongside the expansion of Kumasi Airport and upgrades to air traffic control systems.

He also announced the rollout of advanced 3D security scanners at Terminals 2 and 3, which will enhance aviation security while improving passenger convenience by eliminating the need to remove laptops, belts, and shoes during screening.

President Mahama further emphasized plans to re-establish Ghana’s national airline, describing it as a strategic move to create jobs and strengthen Ghana’s aviation footprint globally.

Additionally, the upcoming e-visa system will allow applicants to complete visa processes online, eliminating the need for physical visits to embassies.

The President commended stakeholders, engineers, and private partners working on the various projects, urging timely and value-for-money delivery.

The sod-cutting, he said, marks the beginning of a transformative phase for Ghana’s aviation sector, one that signals the country’s readiness to compete, expand, and lead in West Africa’s growing aviation market.
