Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has assured government of the Minority Caucus’ support in addressing challenges in the energy sector if the Minister for Energy presents a clear reform agenda to Parliament.
Speaking in an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Afenyo-Markin called on Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, to bring a policy paper to Parliament outlining reforms aimed at resolving the country’s energy challenges.
According to him, the Minority is prepared to put politics aside and support any policy direction that will improve electricity supply, reduce losses in the sector and strengthen the economy.
“We will support him if he brings reforms forward. The Energy Minister should come to Parliament with a policy paper on reform. Let’s support him,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin argued that Ghana’s energy problems require national cooperation and should not become a partisan issue. He warned that failure to implement meaningful reforms would continue to place pressure on public finances.
“If we do not work together in the energy sector to stabilise the economy, we will continue to spend money that could otherwise go into hospitals, schools and infrastructure just to pay for bills that people have consumed and refused to pay,” he stated.
The Minority Leader also raised concerns about the increasing cost of electricity, saying industries and households are now paying more for power while supply challenges remain.
He noted that electricity tariffs have risen significantly and insisted that stable and affordable electricity remains a major concern for ordinary Ghanaians and businesses.
Afenyo-Markin further called for renewed attention to reforms within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), including efforts to reduce system losses, tackle illegal connections and improve the performance of prepaid metering systems.
He cited challenges with faulty prepaid meters in some communities and stressed the need for practical solutions that improve service delivery.
Touching on investment and economic growth, the Minority Leader said reliable and affordable electricity is essential for attracting private sector investment and creating jobs.
He urged government and opposition lawmakers to work together to find long-term solutions to the energy crisis, saying the country must move beyond political disagreements and focus on delivering stable power for citizens and businesses.
