The Mfantsipim 150th Anniversary Planning Committee has officially launched the Mfantsipim 150th Anniversary Awards and Fundraising Dinner, marking a momentous milestone in the school’s sesquicentennial journey.

The launch, which took place during a Press Soirée at KGL House in Labone on Friday, May 29, 2026, sets the stage for a grand celebration slated for later this year. The main flagship event will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the Palms Convention Centre, La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

A Legacy of Excellence and Nation-Building

Delivering his address, Capt. John B. Yamoah, Chairman of the Mfantsipim 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, emphasized that the awards initiative is designed to preserve and promote the core values that have defined Ghana’s oldest secondary institution for a century and a half.

”We are here to officially launch the Mfantsipim 150th Anniversary Awards initiative, established to recognize and honour distinguished and deserving ‘Old Boys’, former and present Staff of the School, individuals, groups and institutions, whose contributions have significantly impacted Mfantsipim, secondary education and national development,” Capt. Yamoah stated.

He noted that beyond celebrating achievement, the initiative serves a dual purpose: reinforcing values like leadership, discipline, integrity, excellence, service, and commitment to nation-building, while acting as an inspiration for the current crop of students to strive for greater heights.

Uncompromising Standards and Transparency

To ensure the highest standards of credibility, fairness, and neutrality, the committee has partnered with international professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers Ghana (PwC Ghana). PwC Ghana has graciously agreed, on a pro bono basis, to independently oversee the evaluation process and determine the eventual winners.

Capt. Yamoah commended the Chairman of the Awards Subcommittee, Prof. David Ofori Adjei (’67), and his team for their dedication in bringing the framework to life. The public launch provides a transparent overview of the various award categories, nomination procedures, and eligibility requirements.

The award categories are structured to recognize diverse tiers of impact, including:

•The Distinguished & Emerging Category, the Education Category, the Pan-Industry Category, and the MOBA (Mfantsipim Old Boys Association) Special Category.

A Milestone in Ghana’s Educational History

Founded in 1876 by the Wesleyan Mission, Mfantsipim has long been regarded as a cornerstone of secondary education and character formation in the region, producing exemplary leaders across government, business, science, religion, and the arts.

The 150th-anniversary celebrations aim to anchor this legacy firmly within the broader context of national development. As highlighted by the Chairman’s speech, the sesquicentennial is “not merely as our alma mater’s celebration, but as a significant milestone in Ghana’s educational and leadership development history.”

Call to Action for the Public and MOBA

The Planning Committee has called on all Old Boys, regional chapters, Year Groups of MOBA, and the general public to actively participate in the upcoming nomination and selection windows. Funds raised from the flagship October dinner will be channeled into supporting the implementation of key anniversary legacy projects on the school’s campus.

The event concluded with a strong expression of gratitude to key institutional stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the Methodist Church Ghana, alongside media partners for their continued coverage of the Mfantsipim@150 milestone.
