The Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, has announced plans to establish one of the world’s largest gold refineries in Ghana as part of efforts to make the country a major gold processing hub in Africa.
He revealed this on Friday, May 29, 2026, while speaking in a meeting with the National House of Chiefs in the Ashanti Region.
According to him, the refinery will have a processing capacity of 600 tonnes, making it one of the largest gold refineries on the continent and globally competitive in the industry.
“It’s going to be a 600-tonne capacity refinery’’ he said.
Mr. Gyamfi disclosed that construction of the refinery is expected to begin later this year, with the project scheduled for completion in 2027.
Mr. Gyamfi explained that GoldBod is currently finalizing a new agreement for the project, which forms part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen Ghana’s position in the global gold market.
“We’re in the process of signing a new agreement that will lead to the establishment of one of the biggest refineries in the world in Ghana,” he said.
He added that the refinery would not only process gold produced in Ghana but could also refine gold from neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso and Togo.
‘’It will refine all the gold we produce here in Ghana and also gold from other countries’’ he said.
The project is expected to boost Ghana’s mining sector, create jobs, and increase the country’s value addition in gold production.
