For years, pupils of Darul-Ulum Basic School at Kanvili-Kpawumo in the Tamale North Constituency have struggled to learn under difficult conditions, including overcrowded classrooms, inadequate furniture, and an ageing school block described by authorities as unsafe.

The situation has forced some classes to be combined, while many pupils have had to sit on the floor during lessons due to a shortage of desks and chairs.

According to the Headteacher, Abdul Karim Hussein, the school’s infrastructure challenges have significantly affected effective teaching and learning.

“The current primary school block is a death trap, and pupils in Primary Five and Six have been combined due to inadequate classroom space. Most of the pupils also sit on the floor because of insufficient furniture,” he said.

With nearly 500 pupils enrolled, the school has long faced pressure on its limited facilities, raising concerns among teachers, parents, and community members about the quality of education being delivered.

To address these challenges, a new fully furnished six-unit classroom block has been provided for the school through the efforts of the Member of Parliament for Tamale North and Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhiyini, with funding support from the Qatar Charity Foundation.

The facility includes six classrooms, a teachers’ common room, a headteacher’s office, a 20-seater library, and separate washroom facilities for teachers and pupils.

School authorities believe the intervention will help ease classroom congestion, improve safety, and provide a more conducive environment for learning.

The Country Director of the Qatar Charity Foundation, Hasan Ali Owda, said the project forms part of the Foundation’s commitment to improving access to quality education in underserved communities. He thanked the community for its support during the implementation of the project.

For his part, Alhassan Suhiyini said education remains a key priority and pledged to continue pursuing development projects that improve the lives of residents in the constituency.
