The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) on Saturday, commenced a four week massive clean up exercise in the harbour city as part of its Tema Restoration Agenda.

Officials of the Assembly, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), personnel of the Eastern Naval Base, First Batallion of Infantry (Michel Camp), Ghana Police Service together with market women as well as residents swept open spaces and desilted gutters at the central business area of Tema Community One.

Mr Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, told the media that the clean-up would be replicated at Tema Central, Manhean and the catchment of the Chemu lagoon.

Mr Anang-La noted that the needed dredging of the Chemu lagoon would be started during the four weeks period stating that unauthorised structures would also be cleared from the area.

He indicated that this exercise was different from previous ones as it was aimed at not only clearing refuse but also moving of tables and other structures erected on the shoulders of the roads.

He observed that most traders in Community One were non-residents who come to trade and leave behind filth and other things for the Assembly to clean, a situation he indicated would not be tolerated.

Mr Frank Asante, Public Relations Officer, TMA, on his part said the clean-up was also to usher in the celebration of Ghana’s 62nd Independence Day anniversary in the Metropolis.

Mr Asante added that the Assembly would also use the exercise to remind residents of their responsibility to clean their immediate surroundings, announcing that residents who fail to do so would be prosecuted.
