The Second- in-Command at the Koforidua Prisons, ADP Joseph Asabre, has hinted that the inmates are fed on GH¢1.80 a day. He described the amount as woefully inadequate.

ADP Asante said sometimes they depend on philanthropists and individual organisations to feed the inmates.

He dropped the hint when officials from the Eastern Regional Commission for Human Right and Administrative Justice, CHRAJ, visited the facility to inspect conditions of inmates.

Mr Asabre described the situation as worrying and appealed to government to do something about it.

He disclosed that the prison currently has 18 cells with over four hundred inmates.

ADP Asabre said the facility which was built to accommodate 200 inmates is currently so congested that the prisoners find it difficult to survive.

He said management is planning to expand the facility to get more cells to accommodate the inmates, and appealed to philanthropists and individuals to go to their aid.
