As part of the Tertiary Education reforms in proficiency teaching certificate will be a requirement for prospective lecturers.

The aim is to ensure lecturers are equipped with the skill of impacting knowledge to students.

Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education, Prof. Mohammed Salifu made this known at a forum on Tertiary Education in Accra. There will be refresher courses for those already teaching, to update their skills.

Professor Salifu announced that government will also establish an Open University to train graduates in technology to feed industries.

The forum is part of the national effort to develop a comprehensive Tertiary Educational Policy.

In the absence of such policy, tertiary institutions in the countryoperate an autonomous structure, which has not been helpful.

The reforms, contained in a bill before Parliament will streamline Tertiary Education when passed into law.

Prof. Salifu, asked lecturers to constantly build their competencies for effective teaching.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, said there was broad consultation in the development of the tertiary education policy.

He noted that a single document on tertiary education is one of the best international practices on education.

The Tertiary Education Policy would among other things, guide financing, appointment, admissions, equity, and relevance of the institutions.
