The Leadership of Parliament has asked research institutions to expand their scope in the assessment of Members of the House. Reacting to recent research findings by the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, both the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrissu, said there is the need for those institutions to collaborate with Parliament, so that they can all agree on a common framework for the research.
Mr. Iddrissu said the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana must not be seen to be contributing to the misconception about the role of MPs.
The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also indicated that even though Parliament welcomes such research works, the Department of Political Science got the basis wrong.
According to him, the focus of the research should be the core functions of Parliament and its members.
The Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, last week revealed its findings on a research into the performance of Parliamentarians in their Constituencies. It found that more than half of the MPs are likely to lose their seats if elections were held today, because their constituents alleged the MPs are not performing well.
