The celebration of Senator John McCain’s life as a former prisoner of war and maverick politician, enters a second day with a church service and military salute before his casket departs his adopted state of Arizona for the US Capitol.
A motorcade with Mr McCain’s remains left this morning from the Arizona Capitol, where he lied in state for thousands of people to bid him goodbye.
His family and friends gathered for an emotional private service, which saw his wife Cindy McCain pressing her face against his coffin and daughter Meghan McCain erupting in audible sobs.
Arizona residents have been invited to honour Mr McCain by lining the route from the Capitol to the North Phoenix Baptist Church, where an honour guard will greet the hearse when it arrives.
Along with invited family and friends, around one thousand seats were being made available to members of the public who signed up.
