China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, has begun a five-day visit to Africa, marking the 36th consecutive year that the continent has been the destination of the Chinese Foreign Minister’s first overseas trip of the year. Wang Yi’s itinerary includes stops in Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, and Lesotho, where he will strengthen China’s strategic partnerships and explore new avenues for cooperation.

In Ethiopia, Wang Yi will reinforce China’s alliance with one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, building on existing projects like the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway. The visit is expected to unlock new opportunities for Chinese investment in Ethiopia’s manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.

Somalia will receive a diplomatic boost, with China reaffirming its support for the country’s territorial integrity and development efforts. Wang Yi’s visit comes at a critical time, as Somalia navigates regional challenges and seeks international partnerships.

Tanzania is a key destination for Wang Yi, given the country’s strategic location and rich natural resources. China is refurbishing the Tazara Railway, a vital transportation artery, and exploring new investments in Tanzania’s mining and energy sectors.

In Lesotho, Wang Yi will promote China-Africa trade, with Lesotho poised to benefit from China’s free-trade policies and tariff-free access to China’s market. The visit will also focus on strengthening people-to-people ties and cultural exchanges.

Wang Yi will also attend the launching ceremony of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, a platform for cultural, educational, and grassroots initiatives aimed at deepening mutual understanding and cooperation.

This visit underscores China’s commitment to Africa’s development and its position as a key partner in the continent’s growth. As China and Africa celebrate 60 years of diplomatic ties, Wang Yi’s visit is expected to inject new momentum into the partnership, creating opportunities for shared prosperity and progress.
