The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as its candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union in 2027.
The endorsement was unanimously approved by the Authority of Heads of State and Government, following earlier support expressed by ECOWAS foreign affairs ministers at a meeting in Abuja.
The recommendation was adopted during the Council’s 95th Ordinary Session in the Nigerian capital and formally forwarded to the Authority for approval on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
In a statement, ECOWAS commended member states for supporting Ghana’s candidacy, noting the country’s contributions to regional integration and its standing within the international community.
The bloc said the decision reflects a shared resolve to collectively support candidates from ECOWAS member states in international organisations, including the African Union, to advance and protect the region’s interests.
ECOWAS added that the endorsement underscores its commitment to strengthening West Africa’s influence in continental and global institutions.
The Authority of Heads of State and Government is now expected to formally adopt the declaration endorsing Ghana’s bid for the African Union chairmanship in 2027.
