The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed serious concern regarding recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
While recognizing states’ rights to combat international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking, ECOWAS reminded the global community of its duty to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This obligation is clearly outlined in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.
ECOWAS declared full alignment with the African Union’s statement issued on January 3, 2026. That position specifically calls for restraint and inclusive dialogue among Venezuela’s people.
The regional bloc reaffirmed its solidarity with Venezuelans and urged all nations to honour the country’s independence and borders. ECOWAS pledged support as the people pursue their future via an inclusive approach.
ECOWAS positioned its message as a firm endorsement of international law amid escalating tensions. The statement underscores West Africa’s commitment to peaceful resolutions worldwide.
