Metalworkers in South Africa on strike over pay increase

South Africa’s metal workers’ union has begun an indefinite strike seeking pay increase.

The union has around 155,000 members working in various industries including auto-mechanics.

Reports say initial wage hike talks with employer bodies became deadlocked and arbitration failed.

The union is seeking an eight percent wage increment and subsequent two percent above the inflation rate for the following two years.

Several marches and rallies were held yesterday across South Africa as the aggrieved members called out on government and employers to address their concerns
