At least a 1,000 people have been killed with an entire village flattened and buried under a landslide in Tarasin village, near the Marra mountains in Sudan’s Western Darfur region, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement.

The landslide happened on Sunday, covering homes and residents with tons of earth. The Sudan Liberation Movement reported that only one person survived the disaster, showing how severe it was.

The Liberation Movement has urgently asked the United Nations and other aid organisations for help with search and rescue efforts.

The Marra mountains are known for their rough terrain and have experienced violence and displacement due to ongoing conflicts. This disaster adds to the suffering of a community already dealing with the effects of conflict.

As rescue teams mobilize, the international community is urged to respond swiftly to provide relief to those impacted by this unfortunate event. The Sudan Liberation Movement continues to coordinate with local authorities to assess the full extent of the damage and to facilitate recovery efforts in the coming days.

With so many lives lost, this landslide highlights the risks faced by communities in conflict zones and the urgent need for better disaster preparedness and response plans.
