The Umbrella Academy season one dropped on Netflix last week with fans hungry to see what happens next to the team of young superheroes.
So it’s a good thing that the show, based on a comic book series written by My Chemical Romance’s front man Gerard Way and Gabriel Bà, has a load of material to stem from in case it gets the green light for a second installment.
However, the bad news is that it roughly takes 18 months to make a season…
Showrunner Steve Blackman told IndieWire: ‘I hope we get a second and third and fourth season, but I knew that having a great ending is important for Netflix as a streamer.
‘You really want people to say, “I’ve got to come back and watch what happens.” That was ultimate in my mind.’
The Umbrella Academy follows the adventures of seven children bred to save the world from an unknown threat, with a cast that features the likes of Ellen Page, Mary J Blige, Robert Sheehan and Tom Hopper.
The first series, titled Apocalypse Suite was officially published in 2007 with the second series, called Dallas, following in 2008.
Last year, Gerard published the first issue of a third series called Hotel Oblivion and a fourth is currently in development.
If the new series gets the go ahead for season two, there’s a chance that it could catch up with the comics though, with Blackman adding: ‘It takes us 18 months to do a season.
‘The goal is not to diverge. Not everything translates from the graphic novel page to the screen, but there’s a legion of fans and I want to bring in a whole new legion of fans who’ve never read the graphic novel, so the goal is not to just go off in our own direction.
‘I like Gerard and Gabriel’s ideas so much, the goal is keep on trucking behind them, beside them. Things will deviate, but the goal is to try to be true to the source material.’
