Ghanaian entertainment pundit and artiste manager Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, popularly known as BullGod, has criticised the country’s prison system, saying it no longer reforms inmates and instead leaves many more hardened.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on March 10,2026, BullGod said the current system lacks meaningful rehabilitation programmes.
“There are no reforms in prisons anymore; people go in and come out more hardened than ever,” he said.
BullGod shared his personal experience during a period he spent at Cantonments Police Station, saying prayer sessions among detainees often reflected deep frustration and anger towards authorities.
“When I spent my time in Cantonments Police Station, we prayed every midnight from 12am to 3am. During those hours, the prayer topics were directed at judges, police and investigators. That showed how much bitterness existed among the inmates,” he said.
He argued that the prison environment is not conducive to rehabilitation, citing prolonged detention, poor conditions and limited access to sunlight as some of the challenges faced by inmates.
BullGod said he is advocating prison reform and supporting initiatives such as art therapy programmes to give inmates hope and promote healing.
“What we are doing may not solve everything, but we are bringing some light and hope to the people in there. Instead of staring at blank, dirty and depressing walls, we are putting colour and art on them because art has a healing ability,” he said.
