The Duke of Sussex faces a significant legal challenge from the very organization he helped establish nearly two decades ago. Sentebale, a charity founded by Prince Harry to support vulnerable youth in southern Africa, has filed a defamation lawsuit against him in London’s High Court. The litigation marks a historic low in the relationship between the Prince and the entity created to honor the legacy of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

Allegations of a Coordinated Media Campaign

The lawsuit stems from what the charity describes as a “coordinated adverse media campaign” orchestrated by Prince Harry and his associate, Mark Dyer. Court records filed on March 23 and 24, 2026, indicate the claim involves “defamation – libel and slander.” While specific details remain shielded from the public, the charity’s executive director and board of trustees issued a statement clarifying their motives for the legal action.

The leadership of Sentebale maintains that the actions of the defendants caused “reputational harm to the charity, its leadership, and its strategic partners.” The statement further alleges that Prince Harry and Mr. Dyer were the “architects of that adverse media campaign, which has had significant viral impact and triggered an onslaught of cyberbullying directed at the charity and its leadership.” Consequently, the organization seeks “the court’s intervention, protection, and restitution.”

Defence Rejects Offensive Claims

A spokesperson for Prince Harry and Mark Dyer has issued a firm rebuttal to the allegations. The defense team stated that the pair “categorically reject these offensive

and damaging claims.” The defense also questioned the ethics of the legal proceedings themselves, noting the irony of a charitable organization targeting its founders.

“It is extraordinary that charitable funds are now being used to pursue legal action against the very people who built and supported the organization for nearly two decades, rather than being directed to the communities the charity was created to serve,” the spokesperson said. However, Sentebale’s current trustees countered this by stating that legal costs are being met “entirely by external funding and no charitable funds have been used.”

Roots of a Bitter Boardroom Dispute

The legal conflict is the culmination of years of internal friction regarding governance and fundraising strategies. The discord became public in 2023 and intensified until March 2025, when Prince Harry and his co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, resigned as patrons. Their departure coincided with the mass resignation of several trustees who had lost “trust and confidence” in the board’s chair, Sophie Chandauka.

At the time of his resignation, Prince Harry described the situation as “devastating.” He and Prince Seeiso released a joint statement noting that “the relationship between the charity’s trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation.” They added that “what’s transpired is unthinkable. We are in shock that we have to do this, but we have a continued responsibility to Sentebale’s beneficiaries, so we will be sharing all of our concerns with the Charity Commission as to how this came about.”

Allegations of Mismanagement and Misogynoir

The dispute featured serious accusations from both sides. Sophie Chandauka claimed she had acted to expose “issues of poor governance, weak executive management, abuse of power, bullying, harassment, misogyny, misogynoir, and the coverup that ensued.” She later accused Prince Harry of orchestrating a bullying campaign to force her out, telling Sky News that his resignation was “an example of harassment and bullying at scale.” She further alleged that the Duke interfered with a whistleblower complaint, stating, “So it’s a cover-up, and the prince is involved.”

Specific points of contention included a 2024 polo fundraiser in Miami. Ms. Chandauka alleged the event was jeopardized when Harry requested a Netflix camera crew attend to film for a documentary series, significantly increasing venue costs. She also claimed friction arose after she refused a request from the Duke to issue a public statement in support of the Duchess of Sussex following an awkward stage appearance during the trophy presentation, asserting that the organization “cannot be an extension of the Sussexes.”

Conversely, reports suggested that arguments over financial problems and disagreements about fundraising had inflamed the divisions within the charity. Prince Harry had recently bolstered the charity’s finances with a £1.2 million donation from the profits of his memoir, Spare, yet even this contribution could not bridge the gap between the warring factions.

Findings of the Charity Commission

The Charity Commission for England and Wales launched an investigation into Sentebale’s governance following the public fallout. In August 2025, the regulator released its findings, which provided a mixed verdict. While the commission found no evidence of “widespread or systemic bullying or harassment, including misogyny or misogynoir,” it delivered a sharp rebuke to all individuals involved in the power struggle.

Charity Commission chief executive David Holdsworth stated that “Sentebale’s problems played out in the public eye, enabling a damaging dispute to harm the charity’s reputation, risk overshadowing its many achievements, and jeopardising the charity’s ability to deliver for the very beneficiaries it was created to serve.” The watchdog criticized “all parties” for allowing the dispute to become public and noted that poorly defined leadership roles contributed to the clash.

The Erosion of a Humanitarian Legacy

As the High Court prepares to hear the case, the future of Sentebale—which means “forget-me-not”—remains intertwined with a founder from whom it is now legally estranged. For Prince Harry, a veteran of several high-profile legal battles against the British press, this case presents a unique challenge as he defends himself against his own creation. The ultimate resolution of this suit will determine whether the charity can successfully pivot to its new governance structure or if the shadow of this boardroom fracture will permanently obscure its humanitarian mission in southern Africa.

The outcome of this litigation holds implications far beyond the courtroom, as it tests the resilience of Diana, Princess of Wales’s charitable legacy in an era of intense public scrutiny. Regardless of the legal verdict, the public fragmentation of such a mission serves as a cautionary tale regarding the complexities of high-profile governance in the modern nonprofit sector.
