Eighteen (18) suspected Western Togoland separatist group members are to be arraigned before the Yendi circuit Court Monday, December 30.

The eighteen suspects including a hundred year old man, were picked up at a primary school in Bimbilla following a tip off.

According to a police source, the suspects were allegedly holding a meeting to rally support for their separatist movement and to recruit some youth of the area for their activities.

Sources within the northern regional police command told GBC’s Radio Ghana, that the intelligence gathered so far, reveals that, the separatists are moving around, the Volta, Oti, Northern and Upper East Regions garnering the support of the residents to break away from Ghana.

GBC’s Radio Ghana investigations also revealed that, the separatists were recently driven away by a prominent chief along the Eastern Corridor when they came to his court to convince him to join the movement for independence.

Investigations also reveal that the Western Togoland Separatist group is now divided following a disagreement between the main architect, Charles Kwame Kudzordzi alias ‘Papavi’ and his brother, identified as ‘Togbe Yesu’ who is said to be a retired military officer. Some recordings obtained from the alleged Bimbilla meeting, indicate that the main architect of the movement, Papavi, had a change of heart and wanted to end his separatist campaign following his first arrest by National Security.

However, his brother, Togbe Yesu, insisted that, they continue, explaining that, he “has lawyers ready to take the matter to the United Nations for a successful arbitration.”

While Papavi cooled down on their ambitions, his brother continued the campaign drawing more supporters to the course. This appears to have irked Papavi, forcing him to hurriedly organise and declare independence for the ‘Western Togoland’.

The Western Togoland group is a separatist group, who claim that, parts of the Volta, Oti, Northern and Upper East regions had an agreement to claim independence from Ghana after a certain period of time. The area was under German rule prior to World War I, but was later divided between France and Britain following the defeat of Germany in the World War. The area later opted to join Ghana after independence through a referendum.
