African ministers adopt action agenda on ecosystem restoration for increased resilience in the region

Africa Ministers of Environment have at a summit on Biodiversity in Sharm El- Sheikh, Egypt agreed to provide strategic direction on ecosystem restoration for increased resilience in the region.

They are also agreed to promote awareness and coordinated action for ecosystem restoration on the continent.

The ministers with partner organisations committed to an action plan taking a coherent approach to addressing the interlinked challenges of biodiversity loss, land degradation and climate change. The Africa Ministerial Summit on Biodiversity was on the theme ” Land and ecosystem degradation; priorities for increased resilience in Africa”.

The Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Dr Cristiana Pasca Palmer said the declaration by the ministers will contribute to shaping a new deal for nature and people in 2020.

Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Dr Yasmine Feuad was optimistic that the summit would lead the way to promoting nature- based solution s for increased resilience and well-being of the people in Africa.

Delegates from fourteen countries including Kenya, The Gambia, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Sudan presented their national commitments and actions taken on ecosystem restoration.
