The President of the Confederation of African Football, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, held a high-level meeting with all 54 CAF Member Associations on April 29, 2026, in Vancouver, Canada, on the eve of the 76th FIFA Congress.

At the end of the meeting, CAF’s Member Associations unanimously endorsed Gianni Infantino for re-election as President of FIFA for the 2027–2031 term. This signals an early and unified show of support that reinforces Africa’s influence in global football politics.

The endorsement, beyond political alignment  also showcases confidence in Infantino’s record of investment and structural reform, particularly across African football.

Since assuming office in 2016, Infantino has overseen a significant increase in FIFA’s financial commitment to the continent, with more than $1 billion invested through development programs with the figure expected to rise further by 2026. These funds, as channeled through initiatives such as the FIFA Forward Program, have supported infrastructure projects, governance reforms, grassroots football, and the growth of women’s football across multiple member associations.

In Ghana for instance, the Ghana Football Association has accessed millions of dollars in FIFA funding over the past decade directed at supporting technical development programs, coach education, competition management, and grassroots expansion. The country also stands to benefit from the increased World Cup revenues, with participation in the expanded 2026 tournament.

Beyond development funding, FIFA’s decision to expand the World Cup to 48 teams has created additional pathways for African nations to qualify and compete at the highest level. This initiative further strengthens the continent’s stake in the global game.

CAF’s unanimous backing also demonstrates continuity under Dr. Motsepe’s leadership, which has prioritized financial transparency, commercial growth, and stronger institutional collaboration with FIFA.

Context and Outlook
The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for 2027. Africa’s early and united endorsement positions the continent as a decisive bloc in shaping the next phase of global football leadership.

At its core, this support is tied to impact. As the game continues to grow commercially, the expectation across Africa is that this investment will translate into stronger domestic structures, better-prepared national teams, and more countries competing meaningfully on the world stage.
