A total of 51 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region have received business, training and educational support packages worth GHC 74,600 Ghana cedis from the Municipal Assembly to improve their standards of living.
The gesture which is in fulfilment of the government’s new policy directive on the efficient utilization of the 3% disability component of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), is intended to economically empower disabled persons to fend for themselves. The Assembly has also allocated some funds for five persons with mental health challenges to help reduce the number of such persons on the streets.
The items include industrial sewing machines, a deep freezer, laptops, and a fufu pounding machine.
The Chairman of the Disability Common Fund Management Committee of the Ho Municipal Assembly, Alex Kwasi Asor Akpo urged Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the Municipality to register with the Assembly to enable them to benefit from the support.
He appealed to the beneficiaries to use the items judiciously so as to gain income to improve their living conditions and that of their dependents.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Ho, Divine Boson who disbursed the items reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare of PWDs in the country.
The Ho Municipal Social Welfare Officer, Cereal Damesi advised women with Disabilities who have been abandoned by their spouses to report to the Social Welfare for prosecution.
A Beneficiary, Joyce Tamara on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked government and the Assembly for the gesture and pledged to put them to good use.
