The European Union has presented equipment to the Ghana Police Service to help in the fight against cross border crime.
The items, which included 40 computers and accessories, work stations and cameras, will augment existing set ups of the West Africa Police Information System (WAPIS), established in collaboration with Interpol in 2011.
WAPIS is an inter-agency information centre that facilitates the collection, sharing and analysis of criminal information from all law enforcement agencies worldwide to support investigation.
The EU Ambassador to Ghana, Diana Acconcia pledged the Union’s support to Africa in the fight against all forms of crime. She highlighted some gains made so far.
Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery who received the equipment, praised the EU for its support over the years. He noted that government places premium on security and will therefore resource the security services to perform efficiently.
Mr Dery appealed to the EU and Interpol to help the sub region to fight cyber crime,which has become a menace.
At the same ceremony, a philanthropist, Robert Ashie Kotei donated two pick ups and six motor bikes to the Police.
