The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced the immediate suspension of the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, citing serious safety concerns following an investigation into the product’s production.
The suspension follows multiple consumer complaints and a regulatory inspection of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited’s manufacturing facility, which revealed significant infractions related to standards and quality. According to the FDA, lapses in the plant’s operations compromised the sealing mechanisms of the canned and pouched products, leading to contamination, bloating, and in some cases, visible mold.
A recall of all affected products particularly the 380g and 1.05kg pouches has already been initiated by the FDA as part of its efforts to protect public health.
The Authority further disclosed that Nutrifoods Ghana Limited had previously been barred from producing the Tasty Tom Tomato Mix in January 2025. This recent development has raised questions about regulatory compliance and oversight. The FDA says internal investigations have commenced to determine whether there were lapses on its part, and any dereliction of duty will be dealt with decisively.
“The safety and well-being of consumers remains our highest priority,” the statement said, adding that the FDA will continue to enforce strict compliance with its food safety standards.
Retailers, wholesalers, and consumers have been advised to take note of the directive and act accordingly. The FDA has assured the public of its commitment to rigorous oversight and transparency.

I don’t think the Ghana FDA is living up to its whole mandate. What I think they should be doing is issue permits to street food vendors before they sell any food on the streets. Their permits should include the inspection and safety of the location where the vendor seeks to operate from, random inspections of the food on sale, and hygienic practices on the job etc. If legislation is required to make this effective, let’s make it all work. Ghana cannot disregard tts street food culture. I am advocating legitimizing it, observing best practises in health and safety to protect that aspect of our economy. My humble viewpoint. Shalom.
