Why are the transport fares not going down even though fuel prices have come down? This is a question being asked by many Ghanaians lately.
On the GTV’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, December 7, Jay Garbarah was in town to interview some drivers and passengers, as well as some hawkers, on the issues. At the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Station in Accra, people interviewed seemed helpless and clueless about the issues.
Drivers:
One of them said they received instructions from the Chairman of the station, who in turn is being given orders from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).
Other drivers also complained about the prices, but for now they had no wherewithal to make changes.
Passengers:
The views of the passengers were entirely different, with some understanding the point of view of the drivers and others calling for a reduction which they believed was due.
Hawkers:
One hawker who was interviewed complained that the fares she had to pay every day were more than the amount she was getting from her goods, and it was a huge concern.
