Ghana’s Attorney General Godfred Dame says he will issue a statement to formally respond to requests to discontinue the criminal trial of James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North.
The Attorney General expressed concern about comments on the case, especially those coming from high-profile personalities in society.
The Omanhene of the Dormaa Traditional Area in the Bono Region and the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Oseadeoyo Agyeman Badu called on President Akufo-Addo to urge the Attorney General to end the trail of embattled Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson.
He also urged the Attorney General to file a nolle prosequi to end the trial of the re-elected MP for the Assin North constituency. Oseadeoyo Agyeman Badu made the appeal at the John Evans Atta Mills 10th Anniversary Commemorative lecture held in Sunyani on Saturday, July 1, 2023.
Omanhene’s argument is that the case would not be beneficial to Ghanaians.
Meanwhile, Private legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu also said on TV3 that signatures will be collected to push for the discontinuation of the case against Mr. Gyakye Quayson.
After proceedings in Court today, Attorney General Godfred Dame noted that such remarks have the potential to affect the fair adjudication of the case.
He noted, however, that the issues would be addressed in a comprehension release.
“I will come out with a proper statement on the matter, and it will be in respect of all comments generally which have the tendency to subvert the administration of justice, I think that it is very unhealthy for our democratic dispensation, and we must not countenance the same.”
