The Government of Ghana has officially relaunched the National Sanitation Day (NSD) under its renewed “Clean Up Ghana Agenda,” with a directive for daily clearance of public spaces across the country.
Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim (MP), made the announcement on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, during a meeting with Members of Parliament (MPs) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from the Greater Accra Region at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Head Office.

He explained that the reintroduction of the initiative is aimed at restoring discipline and pride in public spaces, empowering local government structures by making sanitation a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for all MMDCEs, and ensuring active citizen participation and accountability.
As part of the new directives, all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are required to ensure that ceremonial streets, markets, bus terminals, and other public spaces are cleared of visible filth and nuisances by 8:00 a.m. each day, effective Thursday, September 4, 2025.
“This is not just about one day of cleaning,” Hon. Ibrahim emphasized. “It is about making sanitation a culture. Every MMDA must take responsibility for their jurisdiction, and citizens must also be active partners in this renewed fight for a cleaner Ghana.”
The move signals government’s determination to enforce sanitation as a national priority, following concerns over mounting waste management challenges in urban centers, particularly in Accra and Kumasi.

The reintroduced National Sanitation Day is expected to be observed on the first Saturday of every month, while the new daily clearance directive ensures that cleanliness becomes a routine responsibility rather than an occasional campaign.
