The Minority Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana’s Parliament has declared its full support for the party’s planned ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration, scheduled for May 5, 2025

According to the group, the upcoming protest is not a partisan event but a necessary stand to protect Ghana’s democracy and judicial independence.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri Constituency in the Eastern region, Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, maintained that the planned demonstration is about upholding constitutional principles rather than advancing political interests.

“History has shown us the consequences of silence in the face of democratic backsliding, and we cannot afford to ignore the repetition of these dangerous patterns.

We strongly reject these developments and all attempts to manipulate constitutional provisions or tamper with the impartiality of the judiciary.

We therefore stand in solidarity with the political parties, together with every citizen who cherishes democracy, to urge the peaceful protestors on.

This is not about partisanship. This is about principle. It is about preserving the rule of law, ensuring the independence of the judiciary, and protecting the constitutional fabric of our beloved nation,” portions of the statement read.

Meanwhile, the organisers of the demonstration, led by the opposition NPP and four other minor political parties, say their intended action is in response to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkonoo by President John Dramani Mahama.

The parties have described the suspension as a direct assault on the judiciary and an attempt to erode the independence of the country’s legal system.
