The Africa Center for Digital Transformation (ACDT) has welcomed the National Identification Authority’s (NIA) decision to introduce an e-wallet feature on the Ghana Card, a move the think tank has long championed as key to advancing Ghana’s digital economy.

The NIA recently confirmed plans to roll out the e-wallet, which will allow the Ghana Card to function as an ATM card while also serving as a gateway for digital financial services nationwide.

A Milestone for Digital Transformation

The announcement marks a significant win for ACDT, which has consistently advocated for the full integration of the Ghana Card into the country’s financial ecosystem. Through policy engagements, stakeholder consultations, and thought leadership articles, ACDT highlighted the card’s potential to:
• Serve as a secure national digital identity.
• Provide financial access by enhancing banking and payments.
• Act as a platform for interoperability and inclusion within Ghana’s digital economy.

Earlier this year, ACDT published multiple opinion pieces and media features underscoring these opportunities:

Setting the Pace for Africa

In a statement, ACDT commended the NIA’s forward-looking policy direction, describing the upcoming e-wallet as “a groundbreaking step that will enhance financial inclusion, spur innovation, and accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.”

The Center also noted that this development positions Ghana as a model for other African nations seeking to leverage digital identity systems for socioeconomic growth.
