The Ghana Health Service in the Northern Region has launched a cholera awareness campaign to educate the public on prevention and early detection. Northern Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Chrysantus Kubio, emphasized the importance of sensitization, especially with the onset of the rainy season, which increases the risk of cholera outbreaks.

“We don’t have cholera in the Northern Region, but we know that the rains are setting in, and looking at our environment and previous outbreaks in other parts of the country, the risk is high,” Dr. Kubio said. “Prevention is key, and we are able to prevent. But in the event that people fall sick, we should be able to pick them early enough so that we can contain them.”

According to Dr. Kubio, although there are currently no reported cases of cholera in the Northern Region, the risk is high due to previous outbreaks in other parts of the country.  Dr. Kubio said this at a media briefing on Cholera in Tamale.

He  highlighted the need for community members to be aware of the signs and symptoms of cholera, such as sudden and acute diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Dr. Kubio cautioned against creating fear and panic during the sensitization process, emphasizing the need for careful messaging.

“Tailor the messages to be able to reach the population for them to be aware and put in prevention measures for us to prevent any cholera outbreak.”

He also took the opportunity to acknowledge World Hypertension Day, highlighting the importance of addressing various health issues. He said the Northern Region hopes to maintain its cholera-free status and prevent any potential outbreaks.

Health Promotion Manager at Health Promotion Division of Ghana Health Service, Mrs. Patience Boahen, added that the region is not complacent despite having no reported cases. “We cannot be complacent. We have to be prepared for all public health emergencies. We need to educate our communities and let them know that it is possible for us to also get a case of cholera, especially when the rains have started.”

She said the awareness campaign aims to promote behavioral change and encourage community members to use toilet facilities, wash hands regularly, and ensure safe drinking water. The Ghana Health Service has prepared educational materials, including pictorial messages, to reach a wider audience.

Deputy Director Clinical Care, GHS,Takyi Duayeden, explained that cholera is caused by a gram-negative bacteria called Vibrio cholerae, transmitted through contaminated food and water. He highlighted the importance of early detection and prompt treatment, noting that cholera can be deadly if not managed properly.

The Cholera Awareness campaign aims to prevent any potential outbreak and ensure that the region remains cholera-free.
