Private legal practitioner, Lawyer Martin Kpebu, has called on Ghanaians to hold the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) accountable to ensure justice is served in the ongoing SML scandal.
Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints show, Mr. Kpebu welcomed recent developments in the scandal, including arrests, but warned that arrests alone are not enough. He stressed that the real victory will come when the case is taken to court and prosecuted properly.
“It’s good that the OSP is finally taking steps on the matter, but we need to make sure they go the full length. An arrest is not a conviction, you can keep someone in custody for days, but if the case doesn’t make it to court, it means very little.” he said
Mr. Kpebu also criticized the pace at which the OSP is handling the case. He believes that the system is too centralized around the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, which slows down operations. He suggested that a board or committee within the OSP should handle petitions and investigations to increase transparency and speed.

He further reminded Mr. Agyebeng of the boldness shown by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu in the famous Agyapa deal, who openly named individuals and resisted political interference.
According to Mr. Kpebu, Mr. Agyebeng must also show courage and not shy away from calling out powerful figures who may be obstructing his work.
Mr. Kpebu added that although he personally knows the Special Prosecutor, that does not mean he will not hold him to account.
“If we don’t hold the OSP accountable, we won’t get better results.”
