The anti-galamsey taskforce has arrested Seventeen people engaging in illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” in Samreboi, a town in the Western Region. The suspects include seven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaians.
The arrests were made on Saturday, May 25, by a special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce from the Ghana Police Headquarters. The operation is part of the government’s ongoing effort to stop illegal mining, which is harming the environment and destroying forest reserves.
The police say all the suspects were taken to Accra the same day to help with further investigations.
A statement from the Ghana Police Service said they are increasing security in Samreboi and nearby areas. The aim is to stop more people from damaging the land and water through illegal mining.
The government continues to crack down on galamsey, which has become a serious problem in Ghana. Many rivers and forests are under threat due to these illegal activities.
