20-year-old university student sentenced to life in Tamale

A 20-year old Computer Science student of the University for Development Studies (UDS) has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Tamale High Court following his conviction for the murder of a fellow student in a tragic love-related dispute.

Salifu Nko-nya, was found guilty of murdering a 19-year-old pharmacy student of the UDS in September 2024. The incident, which shocked the university community, was reportedly triggered by a dispute over a romantic relationship. 

The family of the deceased initially thought their son was murdered by armed robbers, however, further investigations pinned Salifu Nko-nyato the act. 

A CCTV camera in the area recorded the incident, showing the victim being chased into an uncompleted building, falling and being stabbed multiple times. 

Prosecutors also provided evidence obtained from telcos that showed that, the Salifu Nko-nya took the deceased’s phobe, removed his sim card and inserted into his phone and started impersonating him shortly after the murder. 

The convicted is said to have sent multiple messages to the family and friends of the deceased, including one to a friend that said, “Charley I go find trouble o, dem go kill me.” 

A jury returned a guilty verdict of 6 to 1 in favor of conviction, leading to the sentencing. Presiding over the case at the Tamale High Court 1.

The convicted sat through the hearing without showing emotions as the sentence was read.
