A plant that has the potential to overtake the cultivation of cocoa is “AFROMOMU” or Grains of Paradise, known among the Akans as “EFOM WISA”.

The plant which is grass-like is a spice and belongs to the ginger family.

With the assistance of the Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute of the CSIR, a conservation NGO, Arocha Ghana has assisted 10 communities in the Eastern region to cultivate 6,000 seedlings of the plant.

The objective is to provide alternative income for the communities who rely on the Atiwa forest for their livelihood.

The Collaborative Resource Management Officer of the Organisation, Daniel Ewu, said with the cultivation of the plant two years ago, more people have expressed interest in cultivating the plant since the money being generated is more than that of cocoa.
