Two people have died and several others have been injured following a violent clash between two factions on Sunday, February 1, 2026, over a long-standing land and chieftaincy dispute in Abunyanya, a farming community in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region.

The Assembly Member for the Abunyanya Electoral Area and Presiding Member of the Nkwanta North District Assembly, Alhassan Abubakar, said the conflict began when a resident of Abunyanya No.1 started developing a parcel of disputed land.

Attempts by residents of Abunyanya No.2 to stop the development reportedly triggered the confrontation.

Despite early intervention by the District Security Committee (DISEC) and the involvement of community leaders, the situation escalated.

“DISEC summoned the parties to resolve the matter, but the individual continued with the project. This led to gunfire, deaths, injuries, and the destruction of houses, shops and motorbikes,” Mr Abubakar explained.

Military personnel later intervened to calm the situation.

The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has since deployed additional security personnel to Abunyanya and surrounding communities to help restore calm.
