A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has described the Accra-Kumasi highway as a “death trap” following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 16 children.
“Using the Accra- Kumasi highway has gradually become a death trap, there are manholes on the road”, he said.
Speaking on the ‘Current Agenda’ talk show on GTV on August 16, 2025, Mr. Suhuyini called for urgent improvements to the country’s road infrastructure. He urged the Ministry of Roads and Highways to prioritize funding for the repair and maintenance of the highway to prevent further loss of lives.
‘’I will like to see the Ministry in charge of Roads and Highways leading the charge and making a case at cabinet level for the necessary funding to improving the road infrastructure in this country especially that road’’, he added.
Mr. Suhuyini commended the National Chairman of the NDC, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, for visiting the bereaved families and making donations in the aftermath of the tragic accident. However, he emphasized that such gestures, while commendable, are not enough.
He called on the government to take the lead in addressing the root causes of road accidents—chief among them being poor road infrastructure.
He underscored the economic importance of the Accra-Kumasi highway, describing it as a critical national asset that must not be neglected.
Mr. Suhuyini urged leaders in the roads and transport sector to demonstrate genuine leadership by engaging the collective conscience of the government, with the goal of channeling investment into infrastructure that directly impacts the lives and livelihoods of Ghanaians.

He also commended the strong sense of national unity that has emerged in the wake of recent tragedies. According to him, the shared grief following both the road accident and the recent helicopter crash has fostered a spirit of nationalism over partisanship.
“I’m encouraged that, if for nothing at all, these unfortunate incidents have sparked a national conversation that is being embraced with a sense of unity rather than political division. It is my hope and prayer that we do not lose this nationalistic spirit,” he said.
