AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has donated more than GH¢732,000 to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in support of infrastructural development at the university’s Obuasi campus.
The donation brings AngloGold Ashanti’s total financial contribution to KNUST to about GH¢2.5 million since the establishment of the Obuasi campus. This is in addition to the company’s earlier decision to cede its North Mine to the university, enabling KNUST to expand and improve access to quality tertiary education for residents of Obuasi and surrounding communities.
Presenting the cheque on behalf of the mine, Human Resource Manager Meshack Baah said education remains one of AngloGold Ashanti’s key priorities for sustaining development in its operational areas.
He added that the initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to ensuring holistic socio-economic development in Obuasi beyond the lifespan of its gold mining operations.
The Coordinating Dean of the KNUST Obuasi campus, Professor Lawrence Darkwah, expressed appreciation for the company’s continuous support. He noted that the funds would help address some of the infrastructural challenges facing the campus.
Prof Darkwah added that the growing student population has placed pressure on limited facilities, and he appealed to other corporate organisations to emulate AngloGold Ashanti’s example.
