The African Union (AU) has adopted a landmark resolution to extend the theme of Reparations by a decade, covering the period from 2026 to 2036. The resolution was passed during the AU Mid-Year Review held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
Ghana has been selected to lead this significant agenda as Champion, with President John Dramani Mahama expected to play a leading role in advancing the continental reparations conversation.
According to Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, this decision is seen as a strong vote of confidence in Ghana’s commitment to justice, historical redress, and Pan-African leadership.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who announced the development in a Facebook post, also confirmed the successful completion of his tenure as Chair of the Ministerial Committee on Agenda 2063. The South African Foreign Minister is expected to take over the chairmanship.
Key decisions at the summit also included the approval of the African Union’s 2026 Budget and the adoption of the SACA (Strengthening the African Capacity for Action) report.

Hon. Ablakwa described the outcomes of the summit as historic, noting that they reflect a growing determination among African nations to push forward with collective progress.
“Africa shall rise! Justice shall be done!” he declared, quoting Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah: “Forward ever, backward never”.
